The universe is not obligated to make sense to our sensibilities/ sensitivity to certain beliefs. Personal beliefs could be anything - in fact, the entire humanity could be wrongly believing in something for millennia (say for instance the Geocentric belief). Our most common/default mode is ignorance.

But revising one's beliefs based on new evidence is something that must be taught in schools and homes. Being a good Bayesian is all we can hope for - best case. Holding on to "flat earth" beliefs in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary transforms them into dogmatic/irrational/"contrarian just to prove a point" beliefs - which lands them in the "foolish" category. There is no cure for "foolishness/stupidity"

I also have to add this: believe in whatever you want (personal truths). But don't act on them (if you can help it). Don't pass laws based on personal beliefs -- but ground them in objective facts.
